Somaliland is situated on the eastern horn of Africa and lies between the 08°00' - 11°30' parallel north of the equator and between 42°30' - 49°00' meridian east of the Greenwich. It shares borders with Republic of Djibouti to the west, Federal Republic of Ethiopia to the south and Somalia to the east. Somaliland has a coastal line to the north of the country which extends 460 miles along the Red Sea. SOMALILAND REFERENDUM

On May 31, 2001 the people of Somaliland went to the poles to vote in their very first national election. The election was held to ratify their new constitution – a constitution that was drafted to formally withdraw from their union with Somalia. The Initiative & Referendum Institute was there to witness this historic election. In the attached report we make clear that we take no position on their efforts to withdraw from their union with Somalia. However, we do commend the Somaliland government for the efforts they took in making this election open and free of violence and in working to establish a strong and peaceful democracy on the African continent. Flag of SomalilandThe flag of Somaliland, the former British protectorate, was introduced on October 14, 1996, when it was approved by the National Conference. Somaliland, which declared its independence on May 18, 1991. The flag of the Republic of Somaliland shall consist of three horizontal, parallel and equal sections, the top section of which is coloured green and has inscribed in its midst in white in Arabic language La Ilaha Ill-Allah, Muhammadan Rasulullah [There is no other God but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah]; the middle section is white and has inscribed in its midst an equally sided five pointed black star; and the bottom section is coloured clear red.
